CLT20 Final Match Highlights Here

Davy Jacobs had started off imperiously and catapulted Warriors to 45 in the sixth over. Then R Ashwin got one to turn quickly towards the leg stump, Jacobs went for the reverse sweep, but was trapped in front.

Warriors’ Achilles heel is their lower order. Johan Botha bats at no 6; the batting isn’t that deep. And so, the middle-order chose caution over valour and Chennai closed in. L Balaji, who grew in confidence with the Warriors’ non-violent approach against him, slipped in a few quiet overs with his steady line and length stuff. Ashwin continued to tease them with his variations and Muttiah Muralitharan came on in the 10th over to harass them with his ability.

By the half-way mark Jacobs’ blitz at the start seemed a distant memory. As ever, he moved around on his nimble feet and ripped shots with slaughterhouse finality. He smashed Doug Bolinger and Albie Morkel to all parts of the ground. There were his usual shuffle-and-smash shots, but there were also some skilful upper cuts and neat cover drives.
Dhoni, FOUR, finishes the game in typical Dhoni fashion, full on middle and out comes the whiplash, struck hard down the ground and wide of mid-on to seal the title for Chennai

The players run out to the middle and the celebrations begin. Rudi Koertzen, umpiring in his final game, has a congratulatory word with Dhoni. This is the last time a lot of these players will play together as one team. A perfect follow-up the IPL victory this year. They huddle up, pose for the cameras while the Warriors gradually retreat into their dug out. Aniruddha Srikkanth leads the cheers for Chennai. Three rather one-sided final knockout games this tournament, contrary to what was expected as they were fairly closely-matched on paper. Stay tuned, we’ll get you the details from the presentation in a short while.

As expected both teams went in with unchanged combinations. Warriors have done well in the Powerplay overs, while Chennai usually cash in during the middle overs.

MS Dhoni reiterated at the toss that it’s an “emotional moment” for him as this would be the last game this squad will be playing together for Chennai. It doesn’t get bigger than this for Warriors; the cash prize of US$2.5 million can do wonders for the franchise.

Jacobs hasn’t played a game for South Africa yet but, when asked what his plans are, he said he would like to be the vice-captain to Johan Botha in the Twenty20 international team. And there was no trace of arrogance. He said it as though it was a given and, in his mind, it is. A couple of days ago South Africa’s Test, ODI and Twenty20 sides were selected for the home series against Zimbabwe and the tour of the UAE. Jacobs wasn’t in them.

Dhoni’s leadership has its share of admirers. He tries to ensure that he appears calm in the middle, he knows his teams’ weaknesses, he definitely knows its strengths and, like most successful captains, he gets his share of luck.

Dhoni has Doug Bollinger and Albie Morkel, who returned from injury and produced an excellent spell against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The edge in the seam attack will be with Chennai if Morkel can reprise that semi-final performance.

1st Semi Final Channai vs Bangalore Highlights

Chennai have the bragging rights after winning this year’s IPL, but Royal Challengers Bangalore can have something to boast about if they upstage MS Dhoni’s men on Friday. The two sides have already met in the semi-final of a tournament in South Africa – in the 2009 IPL, when Bangalore eased to a six-wicket victory.

The two sides also missed key South African allrounders in their final league matches – Jacques Kallis is out of the tournament with a neck injury, while Albie Morkel has been out for two matches due to an illness. Kallis’ absence has upset Bangalore’s balance, and Chennai will have even more of an advantage if Morkel recovers from his illness in time.

The semi-final presents a chance for the world’s leading six-hitter in Twenty20s to make the impact expected of him.

Another big-name player who has had a quiet tournament so far is Dhoni. A late onslaught against Warriors showed glimpses of what he is capable of, but Chennai will be hoping for more from their captain on Friday.
