MS Dhoni is the top-ranked one-day batsman in the world, but has been part of two shambolic Indian collapses. With some of the youngsters in the middle order finding it hard to adjust to the seaming pitches in the tournament, the team is looking to their captain to deliver.

New Zealand’s inexperienced batting line-up remains their biggest concern. The relaxed format of the tournament and the unseasonal rain which washed out their match against Sri Lanka means their batsmen have, amazingly, not had a bat in the middle for a dozen days, which the captain Ross Taylor said is “going to give a little more anxiety than the actual game itself.”

India Team  : 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Dinesh Karthik, 3 Rohit Sharma/Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 Pragyan Ojha, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra

New Zealand Team : 1 Martin Guptill, 2 BJ Watling, 3 Ross Taylor (capt), 4 Kane Williamson/ Peter Ingram, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Grant Elliott, 7 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Daryl Tuffey, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Andy McKay

Sri Lanka win 5th ODI match againest india

By admin on August 23rd, 2010

Indian Team suffered its biggest One-Day International defeat in terms of balls remaining, as Sri Lanka cruised into the final of the tri-series Micromax Cup with a resounding eight wicket victory in the 5th ODI here on Sunday.

Sri Lanka’s biggest wins over India, Kumar Sangakkara has said the team must aim at winning consistently, irrespective of the margin of victory. In front of a raucous Sunday crowd, Sri Lanka rolled MS Dhoni’s side over for 103, inflicting the largest defeat in India’s history in terms of balls remaining.

One of the minor surprises during Sri Lanka’s chase on Sunday was the promotion of Mahela Jayawardene to the top of the order, pushing the specialist opener, Upul Tharanga, down to No. 3.

Till date, India’s biggest defeat in terms of balls remaining was 174 against Australia at Sydney in 1981. India had scored 63 and Australia responded with 64 for one in that match.

Team India will have to now win its last match against New Zealand on Wednesday to secure a berth in the final.

India have five points while New Zealand have seven points in the ongoing tri-series tournament.

If Sri Lanka win today, they go through to the final, and the India-New Zealand game becomes a knockout. If India win today, both India and New Zealand go through. It’s worth remembering that Sri Lanka have made the finals of every competition involving three or more teams in Sri Lanka, barring the Bank Alfalah Cup in 2003.

It wasn’t abandoned in the true sense of the word there was a reserve day assigned for every match of the tournament, and both teams were to have the toss again on Friday.

Watch New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI Cricket Match Live Scores and Live Updates Starting Time Local 14:30,GMT 09:00,Friday 20th Aug 2010.New Zealand welcomed back Jacob Oram and Grant Elliot, but had to do without Martin Guptill who injured himself in the lead-up to the match. Peter Ingram took his place. On Friday, though, both teams will be allowed to name fresh XIs.

This game was supposed to restore the focus on on-field action after the last three days were dominated by the the Suraj Randiv no-ball, allegations, inquiries, and suspensions. As a result, Randiv, who bowled the no-ball to deny Virender Sehwag a century in the previous game, was suspended for this ODI, and the washed-out day’s play won’t count as time served for him.

This final outing of the series will be a good test for England to see how deep they can dig now that a whitewash is no longer on the cards. It hasn’t often happened that the team has won a series with two games to spare, but they won’t want laziness to creep into performances.

The form of Tim Bresnan with the ball and Luke Wright with the bat has dipped in recent matches, but Flower has faith in his group after their recent successes.

England Team Squad  : 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Michael Yardy, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.

A half-century in the previous game could earn Rohit Sharma a promotion.

Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli have not matched the consistency of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, while Ravindra Jadeja, an allrounder, has only kept his place with his tidy left-arm spin. His counterpart Angelo Mathews, on the other hand, has lived up to his role successfully.

The return of Ashish Nehra and Harbhajan Singh will strengthen India’s bowling but those changes will be driven more by necessity and limited choices. Against the best-available Indian batting line-up, Farveez Maharoof did more than enough to ensure that team selection for the final remained a less than straightforward issue for Sri Lanka.

Pakistan have traditionally under-performed at the Asia Cup, winning just one tournament, and their recent one-day record is miserable, but they have managed to lift their game in recent multi-team events. Admittedly, three of those four have been in the Twenty20 format, and there-in lies the danger Pakistan poses – both to their opponents and to themselves.

Farveez Maharoof has been included in the squad for his past exploits on the seaming Dambulla wicket. There are several names such as Thilina Kandamby, Thilan Samaraweera and Chamara Kapugedera competing for middle-order slots. Add the pedigree of Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan to the mix and Sri Lanka will take some beating.

West Indies have struggled so far in the matches against Zimbabwe, labouring to victory in the second game after losing the Twenty20 and the first ODI. What will give them confidence though is the return of the key allrounder Dwayne Bravo, whose presence – despite having not played for nearly three months – will almost certainly lift the team.

Chris Mpofu leaked 30 runs in four wayward overs during West Indies’ win in the second ODI, and although Shingi Masakadza held his nerve in a tense final over in the first game in Guyana, he too was expensive. Zimbabwe’s batting fell away in the second ODI, and that was one of the reasons behind their loss. They will hope the surface at Kingstown will be more suitable for batting and look to their top order to come good.

West Indies Team Sqiad :
1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Adrian Barath/Darren Bravo, 3 Dwayne Bravo, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Narsingh Deonarine, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Sulieman Benn, 10 Nikita Miller, 11 Kemar Roach.

Zimbabwe Team Squad : 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Vusi Sibanda, 3 Brendan Taylor, 4 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 5 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 6 Greg Lamb, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Graeme Cremer, 9 Prosper Utseya (capt), 10 Ray Price, 11 Chris Mpofu.
